Replay: USC vs. UCLA 2009
THURSDAY
Watching the FSN replay of the '09 USC vs. UCLA contest in which the Trojans were up 21-7 with under a minute left in the game. Then this sequence of events unfolds...
SC takes a knee on first down.
Neuheisel calls a time-out.
Seeing this as a clear indication of some form of disrespect, OC Jeremy Bates approaches Pete Carroll to talk it over. Pete calls in the play.
*Side Note: Just two weeks prior, Carroll was beside himself after his team was steamrolled by a Stanford team that put points on his Trojans. Cue to the post-game handshake where the cameras capture Carroll shouting at Jim Harbaugh, "What's Your Deal?" The Stanford Head Coach, clearly amused at Carroll's befuddlement (obviously a bit mystified as well) replies, "What's YOUR deal?" See, for nine years the Trojans have piled it on opponents late in the fourth quarter, comfortably leading by
On second down, Barkley fakes the hand-off and unleashes a 60-yard bomb to a wide open receiver for another six points.
The SC sideline goes crazy.
Be Content With Mediocrity Cal Fans
Oakland Tribune columnist Monte Poole opines in his column today why Cal should continue to employ Head Football Coach Jeff Tedford.
Highlights include the following:
"You don't fire a coach who rides into Cal and has eight winning seasons before one losing season. Tedford, 49, is the most accomplished coach at the school since the Pappy Waldorf era ended in 1956."
"Cal is not USC or Oregon or Washington. It's not Alabama or Texas or Penn State or Ohio State. Cal never has been a football factory. It's a fabulous university with a football program that typically has precious few and very fleeting brushes with success but a great many unions with failure."

Best Interview With Lane Kiffin This Season, Courtesy of T.J. Simers
T.J. Simers blessed us with this gem of journalism this morning that beautifully illustrates Lane Kiffin's winning personality.
Best interview of the year. Here is an excerpt:
Finally, the right button is pushed when he's asked how devastating it might be to his reputation if Neuheisel wins and he doesn't Saturday.
"I've been called by two Pac-10 coaches," he says with a smirk. "I won't tell you their names, but they called me to say, 'Please don't let him win this game.' ''
I guess "Sark," former USC assistant Steve Sarkisian, who is now the head coach at Washington.
"I won't mention names," Kiffin repeats, "but if you called all the other seven coaches [in the Pac-10] they would probably say the same thing."
Yowza, I knew he could do it. Now maybe everyone here will better appreciate the laugh that Tennessee basketball Coach Bruce Pearl was going for Monday.
Pearl has been suspended for eight games for violating NCAA rules, but he spoke to the Knoxville Quarterback Club.
"I've made mistakes, I clearly did," Pearl tells the group. "But what I was hoping for was that some other dumbass would get on the front page and take me off the hook.
"I miss Lane Kiffin."

Teague Egan-USC Student and Agent
Look up the word "douchebag" in the dictionary and you will land on Teague Egan.
That is him, on the left. What? You wouldn't choose this kid to represent you in your first NFL contract negotiation?
Direct from the LA Times...
Meet Teague Egan, noted golf cart chauffeur, and the country's first certified NFL student agent, well meaning, he says, but with the potential to destroy USC's hopes of recovering from NCAA sanctions. A budding entrepreneur, Egan is probably known best in USC circles for not knowing the rules as a certified NFL agent, resulting in the one-game suspension of Dillon Baxter. His goal now is to represent four to six of his friends, who also happen to be USC football players, in the upcoming NFL draft — signing them as clients as soon as Sunday.
He says he has no written agreement or understanding with any of the football players, which would be an NCAA violation. But he knows his friends, he says, and he knows it will happen. "Like [NFL agent] Drew Rosenhaus who represented every Miami kid after going to school at Miami," he says. "I intend to represent every USC kid."

Petros Reacting To SC Fan Reaction
Petros on 570AM reacting to SC fans after-the-fact rationalization of "We would have won had Barkley played."
"You know what? They (the fans) can say that all they want. it's a rivalry game. USC got outcoached, they got outplayed and they got knocked off the ball when they needed to stop Notre Dame. you can talk about depth all you want for usc but guess what? Dayne Crist didn't start that game. Armando Allen didn't start that game. The best TE in America, Kyle Rudolph, didnt start that game . . . so usc lost the game."

The State of the Cal Bear Football Program
Monte Poole, Columnist for the Oakland Tribune reflected on the state of the Cal Bear football program today. It is an excellent, no bullsh*t assessment of this season, just the latest in a long line of disappointing performances.
"Trudging out of this incarnation of Memorial Stadium for the last time were a stream of Cal folks, players and coaches and fans, chins to chests, looking as if they didn't believe what they had seen.
As if it all had come too suddenly -- the conclusion to Saturday's game, the finality of this unremarkable season and maybe even the end of this 88-year era for the facility.
How to react when all at once a game is lost, a season is completely over and the stadium as we have known it is forever relegated to the past?
"Speechless, pretty much," junior safety Sean Cattouse said after the Golden Bears allowed a Washington touchdown on the final play that resulted in a 16-13 loss.
"I sort of went numb," senior defensive end Cameron Jordan said after Cal's season-ending three-game skid assured the school of its first losing season since 2001.
"Your season comes down to two seconds," coach Jeff Tedford recalled. "In two seconds, you're either going to a bowl game or not.
"So "... we were pretty stunned."
As was the announced crowd of 44,613, which had assembled partly in hopes of seeing Cal salvage a .500 season to become bowl-eligible but largely to say goodbye to the place with five generations of history absorbed within its faded and splintered bleachers.
The Bears (5-7, 3-6 in the Pac-10) will play their 2011 home games at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Upon returning to Berkeley in 2012, they will stroll into a new stadium and performance center, a vastly improved facility -- at an estimated $321 million, it had better be -- generated almost entirely by the success of Tedford's nine-year run as head coach.
Yet there still was the present: Cal closing its winningest decade since the 1930s with Tedford's first losing season.
Making matters worse, athletic director Sandy Barbour and Tedford were placed in the uncomfortable position of spending a few postgame minutes sitting behind microphones defending the school's integrity.
The AD and coach, having conferred with Pac-10 officials during the week, decided Friday to place a one-game suspension on defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi for instructing his players to fake injuries in the Nov. 13 loss to Oregon. The purpose of the deception was to stop the action and slow a no-huddle, high-speed Ducks offense designed to exhaust defenses and limit substitution.
To recap, Cal's football program lost a game in the final seconds, saw its season end in a blink, closed down its stadium and punctuated the day's activity by conceding that it had resorted to trickery in a game it lost two weeks earlier.
For the Bears, it was a turn of events as comprehensively unwelcome as the weather, which was cold and by turns rainy or sunny, with a sprinkling of sleet.
"Just a great sense of disappointment," summarized junior tailback Shane Vereen.
With backup quarterback Brock Mansion struggling once again, Cal's offense consisted mostly of Vereen taking handoffs and trying to make the most of it. He carried 23 times for 106 yards. Cal totaled 283 yards in offense, only 92 through the air.
Moreover, the Bears' offense failed to reach the end zone; Cal's scoring came on 53- and 47-yard field goals by Giorgio Tavecchio and Jordan's 21-yard scoring rumble with a recovered Huskies fumble.
Yet the Bears were up 13-10 when Washington took over at its 21-yard line with 4:39 remaining. The Huskies marched downfield, the big play being a 46-yard completion from quarterback Jake Locker to Jermaine Kearse, until they faced fourth-and-goal from the Cal 1.
Huskies coach Steve Sarkisian chose hubris over humility. Eschewing the potential game-tying field goal, he sent tailback Chris Polk knifing over right tackle and into the end zone.
The clock showed zeros. The Huskies (5-6, 4-4) stormed the field and celebrated with their rooting section.
Fans stood trancelike before slowly moving toward the exits. Cal players and coaches scattered and dithered and, eventually, headed toward the locker room.
"Nobody wants to finish a season like this," Cal junior wideout Marvin Jones said.
The final game day of Memorial Stadium as we have known it for all these years will be as memorable for its heartbreaking denouement as it was forgettable for Cal's lackluster performance.
Quote From USC AD Pat Haden
Courtesy of Scott Wolf, of course...
Rain-soaked fans will be glad to know that USC athletic director Pat Haden referred to coach Lane Kiffin as, "sensational,'' during the telecast and said, "he'll be with us a long time.''
Another season like this one and Lane will be history. No matter how sensational Haden believes he is.

Thank You Kyle Brotzman, Now Go Away Boise State
I would like to thank Kyle Brotzman for his unbelievable performance this evening. I can now fully enjoy my week of non-stop college football media coverage leading up to Saturday without having to hear the two words that make my stomach turn and my ears bleed. Boise. State.
Have a tremendous winter in Idaho. I hear it is lovely this time of year.
See you next year.
Why Is The Trojan Defense Faltering?
Once again, it was the Trojan offense that truly hurt this team, resulting in another loss to a less talented team. Unfortunately, the defense did not help matters, eventually wilting (yet again) in the end, giving up a touchdown by RB Robert Hughes with two minutes left.
I watch this and my mind continually goes back to the hire of 70-year-old Monte Kiffin as Defensive Coordinator, in this package deal courtesy of his son Lane.
I wrote about this some time ago in this blog. The theory that Monte and his Tampa 2 Defense are a poor fit for this young team continues to reaffirm itself in my mind.
More Reaction To USC's Embarrassing Loss To The Irish
It's even tougher when, for seemingly the first time in a decade, your USC team is not as tough or disciplined as the Irish, with USC gaining 35 fewer yards and committing seven more penalties and failing to mount the sort of consistent attack that has worn down nearly a decade worth of Domers.
Put it another way: In a battle of first-year coaches, Brian Kelly seems to give Notre Dame a lot more hope than Kiffin gives USC.

The State Of The SC Passing Game
Matt Barkley was struggling badly before suffering a game-ending injury in the second quarter of the Trojans embarrassing loss to Oregon State.
Barkley gave up a crushing interception that went for a six points.
This is a guy that vowed publicly that he would not throw another interception this season.
From the Times:
When asked about the interception returned for a touchdown last night, Lane Kiffin said he was concerned about falling behind early at Oregon State with that type of play and is why he was extremely conservative on the first couple series with short passes. That raises the question of why in his 23rd college start, Matt Barkley needed a close-to-the-vest game plan at the outset? The interception answered the question.

The Debacle in Corvallis
This post-game quote from the Times says it all:
After emphasizing all week the importance of not underestimating the Beavers, the Trojans did just that -- presenting perhaps their poorest performance of the 2010 season in the same, familiar locale in Oregon. Afterward, they admitted to succumbing to letting up the pressure a little bit, boasting two consecutive wins against the Arizona schools compared to Oregon State's consecutive losses to Pac-10 cellar-dwellers UCLA and Washington State.
"I think we took them lightly," said USC left tackle Matt Kalil, who played poorly as the Trojan offensive line gave up four sacks. "And that's what happens if you don't take a team seriously -- they catch you off-guard like this. They got us today."
